چکیده

Older drivers have one of the highest vehicle crash rates in comparison with other population groups, largely due to the functional effects of the accumulation, and progression of age-related deterioration in visual, cognitive and motor conditions that impact on fitness to drive (Molnar et al., 2007). Numerous studies indicate that the predominant casualty crash type for older drivers involved complex road environments or high cognitive workload situations (Charlton et al., 2005). Statistically, older drivers are less likely to be involved in crashes caused by fatigue, high speed, weather condition, or alcohol than younger drivers. Conversely, older drivers are more likely to be involved in crashes in certain scenarios, such as manoeuvres through intersections; failure to yield the right of way; failure to identify hazards, or to heed stop signs/traffic signals; and problems involving turning and changing lanes (Clarke, Ward, Bartle, & Truman, 2010; Marmeleira, Ferreira, Melo, & Godinho, 2012; McGwin & Brown, 1999). Eye Movements of Younger and Older Drivers

This 2-part study focuses on eye movements to explain driving-related visual performance in younger and older persons. In the first task, participants' eye movements were monitored as they viewed a traffic scene image with a numeric overlay and visually located the numbers in their sequential order. The results showed that older participants had significantly longer search episodes than younger...

Effect of glaucoma on eye movement patterns and laboratory-based hazard detection ability

PURPOSE The mechanisms underlying the elevated crash rates of older drivers with glaucoma are poorly understood. A key driving skill is timely detection of hazards; however, the hazard detection ability of drivers with glaucoma has been largely unexplored. This study assessed the eye movement patterns and visual predictors of performance on a laboratory-based hazard detection task in older driv...

The effects of road commentary training on novice drivers' visual search behaviour: A preliminary investigation

One of the major challenges facing novice drivers seems to be adequately scanning, detecting, and responding to hazards which present during the course of everyday driving; a process that involves ‘reading the road’ and modifying driver behaviour accordingly. Previous studies have indicated that inexperienced drivers tend to utilise only a small proportion of the visual field when driving, and ...

Looks Are (Almost) Everything: Where Drivers Look to Get Information

OBJECTIVE To describe the impact of Rockwell's early eye movements research. BACKGROUND The advent of a new technology enabling measurements of eye movements in natural environments launched the seminal research of a Human Factors pioneer, Tom Rockwell, into how drivers process visual information. METHOD In two seminal Human Factors articles -"Mapping Eye-Movement Pattern to the Visual Scen...
